Talking Sticks

Talking Sticks

Traditionally talking sticks were carried by the lead Elder to council meetings designating who had the right to speak. The lead Elder would hold out the stick and begin the discussion. When he completed what he had to say it would be passed on the next person who wanted to speak. It gave the permission to the one who held it to have say without interuption during these council meetings. It was the responsibility of the lead Elder to secure it for safe keeping until the next meeting.
